Is your pool pump motor noisy, seized, overheating, or no longer running? In this video, I show you how to remove and replace a pool pump motor step by step, including several practical tips that can make the job much easier.
You’ll see how I remove the old motor, keep track of the hardware and components, remove the impeller, install the replacement motor, and reassemble the pump correctly.
One of my favorite tricks is using locking pliers to securely hold the exposed portion of the motor shaft while removing the impeller. This can give you the leverage you need without fighting a shaft that keeps spinning.

Taking pictures during disassembly and laying the parts out in the order they were removed can save a lot of frustration when it is time to put everything back together.
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE: Always turn off the pool pump circuit breaker and verify that power is disconnected before beginning. Pool pump motors use high-voltage electricity, and motor capacitors may retain an electrical charge. Do not attempt this repair unless you understand the electrical and mechanical work involved. When gripping a motor shaft, only use an appropriate exposed section that will not damage the threads, seals, or bearing surfaces. Always follow the instructions supplied by the motor and pump manufacturers.
