Meanwhile, here are some tips on how to site a barn owl nest box on a tree.
Barn owls don't just live in boxes in barns! They can nest in veteran trees with large cavities. The trouble is these are now few and far between so if you don't have a suitable open building but do have a large tree next to good owl hunting ground, you can put up a box. Owls prefer rough pasture where there is an abundance of field voles. They fly silently in low light and have incredible hearing and sight. It is so important that we provide more habitat for these beautiful birds and safe places where they can breed.
The Barn Owl Trust came to Maddy Harland's woodland, did a survey with her to find the best tree to house the box, and put it up. They will return next year to check the box for occupants. Enjoy Russell Savory's incredible footage of this bird hunting and fingers crossed they like the box and decide to breed by the wood!
