Leaders need diversity. But not the kind that focuses on differences to the point of dividing groups. Author and educator Irshad Manji says most Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training focuses on what people are, rather than who they are. And that’s divisive.
Manji advocates for a profoundly new form of DEI, that’s not focused on labels, out-groups, or stereotypes. It’s focused on our shared humanity. When we neglect individuality in favor of labels, we’re taking steps backward on the path to true inclusion.
To overcome this, we must change the paradigm from ‘either/or’ to ‘both/and’. And that starts with empathy: understanding that diversity of thought occurs inside groups — not just between groups.
