It’s #PrematurityAwarenessMonth, and in NICUs across the country, one possibly preventable disease continues to loom over the most vulnerable of patients: Necrotizing enterocolitis. Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating intestinal illness that mainly affects premature babies and can lead to life-threatening complications. It can steal far too many precious moments from families.
Helping lead the charge against NEC is Dr. Brian Scottoline, Associate Professor of Pediatrics in OHSU School of Medicine's Division of Neonatology. Driven by the hope of a world without NEC, he found that when giving premature infants a probiotic naturally found in human milk, our NICU had significantly lower rates of the disease. Now, he’s working with the FDA to bring this potential prevention to NICU patients and their families nationwide.
