What propels a light rail vehicle to its destination? Electricity!
Substations provide power to the overhead catenary wires, allowing light rail vehicles to move through our system. Throughout 2024, our maintenance teams undertook a large-scale infrastructure project, updating all of the original TRAX power substations that run north-south along the TRAX Red Line and up to the University of Utah. With careful planning, and by conducting a large amount of the work at night, the project was completed without a single system shut-down. These upgraded substations provide modernized communications and upgraded capacity for potential future service.
