Originally composed by Mykola Leontovych in 1914, this melody was based on an existing Ukrainian folk chant called 'Shchedryk'. English lyrics were added later by American composer Peter J. Wilhousky, giving the song a Christmas theme. Noted for its four-note ostinato and 3/4 time signature, Carol of the Bells has been covered by countless artists from the Swingle Singers to Pentatonix, and an arrangement by John Williams appeared in the film Home Alone.
