In this video I'll take you through hornpipes, and how to play along to them on your bodhrán with three simple but super effective hornpipe patterns.
I'll also give you some context on what hornpipes actually are, where they came from, along with some musical and technical tips to help you get to grips with this laid back style of dance.

I’m Ruairi Glasheen, and I’m a percussionist, composer and filmmaker based in London. I’ve been playing bodhrán since I was 4 years old and I simply love this instrument! This is the first episode in a series of informal tutorials where I’ll share with you my approach to playing this instrument so please comment below any suggestions or requests you might have!
Frame drums like the bodhran have popped up in musical cultures all over the world for thousands of years though since the early nineteenth century the bodhran has been an important part of Irish traditional music. Some people believe the bodhran found its name from the Gaelic words for skin and tray combined. Others believe it has derived from the Irish word ‘bodhar’ which means deaf or dull.
