This is actually the key to painting ANY subject in watercolour. By focusing on the light and dark values and their shapes, you can simplify every subject in order to paint it accurately. When this falls apart, it's usually because our mind is reluctant to let go of our preconceptions on what the object "should" look like, and see it for what is actually represented in our reference photo.
