The purpose of this video is to provide you with a basic understanding of respiration, the general principles of the operation of, breathing apparatus, an overview of how to select, don, and operate compressed air breathing apparatus (open circuit).
Respiratory hazards at fires and other incidents
H High temperatures
O Oxygen deficiency
T Toxic or poisonous gases
S Smoke/suspended particles/fibres
Breathing Apparatus (BA) - Open circuit sets (CABA)
• Expired breath passed to waste via exhalation valve incorporated in a face mask.
• CABA provide air as it is required.
• Working duration will depend on fitness, competence, mental state, and level of work being
performed.
Closed circuit sets
• Exhaled breath is recycled within the set.
• Oxygen is inhaled from a reservoir through a circuit, incorporating a system which removes carbon dioxide from exhaled breath.
Typical components of BA sets:

• low pressure warning device
• carry frame and harness
• pressure reduction valve, or valves
• demand regulator
• pressure gauge
• face mask and head harness.

There are many types, sizes and makes of BA. However, each can be categorised as either an open
circuit set or a closed circuit set.
Open circuit sets are those in which your expired breath is passed to waste via an exhalation valve incorporated in the face mask. Closed circuit sets are those in which your breath is recycled within the set.
Positive pressure type sets are designed to give maximum respiratory protection in contaminated
atmospheres.
A sets consist of a:
• cylinder
• pressure reducer
• low pressure warning device (usually a whistle)
• carry frame and harness
• demand regulator
• pressure gauge
• face mask and head harness.
