This tutorial focuses on the k3pass stitch in the Open Star stitch pattern in my shawl, Sycamore Star (available on Ravlery).

Worked over a multiple of 3 sts.

I highly recommend a sharp-tipped needle to pick up and pass stitches.

Stitch pattern:
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2 (WS): K2, *yo, k3pass; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 3 (RS): Knit.
Row 4 (WS): K1, *k3pass, yo; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.
