If your Tesla Model Y charge port isn’t opening through normal methods, you can try several alternative approaches, including the touchscreen, key fob, mobile app, physical press, voice commands, or the emergency manual release lever.
Standard Opening Methods
Touchscreen: Navigate to Controls Charging Open Charge Port on the car’s touchscreen. A charge port icon (lightning bolt) may also be used to open it directly
Charge Cable Button: Press and release the button on your Tesla charging cable while the car is unlocked and in Park. Some older charging equipment may not activate the port this way
Key Fob: Hold down the rear trunk button for 1–2 seconds to trigger the charge port to open if your vehicle is unlocked
Mobile App: Open the Tesla app, select your Model Y, and tap the Charge Port icon to remotely open it
Voice Commands: If your Model Y supports voice control, you can say a command to open the charge port
Physical Press: Press the base or bottom of the charge port door if the car is unlocked and an authenticated phone is nearby. This is useful if the touchscreen or other electronic methods fail
