The bigger the ship, the better it is but also more expensive it is to upgrade, repair and replace if it destroyed. In Star Citizen you may have to use your Aurora MR or Mustang Alpha longer than you expect, to keep your economy sustainable. This video shows how much a beginner ship can improve by upgrading it with military components.
AC using unmodded Aurora MR:

A note on weapons: Energy weapons damage shields most and ballistic weapons damage armor most. A mix of weapon types are advised.
A note on ship items: When choosing items, look to the item type. Military is generally better to use if you plan to fight it out. Grade A items is the best but is very expensive and may not be worth is, maybe a class B is plenty enough.

This gameplay session is a flight between Værnes [ENVA] and Ålesund [ENAL].
This video shows my amateur approach to planning of a flight using windy and Navigraph charts.
The in-game checklist of the Cessna Citation Longitude is pretty bad but the video show a basic cold and dark startup, take-off, flight and ILS landing.
