Take a single photo and get a real 3D mesh out of it. The PhotoMesh
tool in MechaPaint reads depth from one image, builds actual geometry
from it, and lets you save it as a flat face or as a watertight solid
you can send straight to a 3D printer.
What is covered
- What the texel numbers mean, 128, 256 and up, and how they map to
the longest side of your image
- The height slider and why the result is more than a plain height map
- How the model separates a window inset, a door recess and a bike
from the flat wall behind them
- Where this works well, walls and dioramas, and where it does not,
standalone objects like a bicycle
- Save Face for the single distorted surface with the original UVs
left alone
- Save Solid for a back plate, rebuilt UVs, chosen texture resolution
and a printable watertight model
Note that he mesh comes out as one continuous
surface, so anything sticking out of the photo becomes an offset in
that sheet rather than its own object. For flat subjects like building
faces that is exactly what you want, and on a color 3D printer the
print comes out looking like the photo.
MechaPaint is a desktop 3D model painter. You import a mesh, paint on
it directly in 3D, and export new texture maps without touching your
source files. MechaPaint.com
If you try this on a wall or a facade of your own, drop a comment with
what height value worked for you.
