To completely reset your PC to factory default settings, you can use the built-in Windows recovery tools to remove all personal files and restore the original operating system state.
Step 1 — Back Up Important Data
Before resetting, back up any files, documents, photos, or software that you want to keep. A factory reset will erase all personal data, installed programs, and system settings.
Step 2 — Access Windows Recovery Options
For Windows 10 and 11:
Click Start, then go to Settings → System → Recovery.
Under Reset this PC, select Reset PC.
Alternatively, you can press Shift while clicking Restart from the Start menu. This will boot the PC into recovery mode.
Step 3 — Choose Reset Options
Remove everything: Select this option to fully wipe your PC and remove all personal files.
Clean the drive (optional but recommended if giving away or selling the PC): This securely erases the drive, making it more difficult to recover your data.
Step 4 — Start the Reset Process
Follow the prompts to confirm your choices. The PC will restart automatically and begin the reset. This may take 30 minutes to a few hours depending on your hardware and the amount of data. The PC will reboot several times during the process.
Step 5 — Reinstall and Set Up Windows
After resetting, Windows will guide you through the initial setup as if it were a new PC. You will need to reconfigure account preferences, network settings, and reinstall any desired applications.
