Better than simply learning a bass line of a song is learning FROM the song: What makes this bass line so cool and how can you create something in the same vein?
A producer may well say: play in the style of...! Take it a step further and check out one of my methods to learn from the song and play in the style of. My sample groove is a Stealers Wheel song.

Song learning tip with Ari: When you want to learn a song you want to go beyond just copying down what the song does. You want to be able to play it in all sorts of areas on the bass. You want to be able to play it in various keys, but more importantly, you want a really dissect it musically.
What makes this song so special? Why is it so famous? Why does it fit the song so well? And then you want to even go beyond that - you want to figure out what makes that bass line special and how can I be inspired by it to make it not only part of a set list but part of my real musical repertoire.
Theres so many ways you can do that. One technique, for example that I like to use is what I call the Reduction. We take a groove and we try to figure out what it is that makes that groove. We look at the context of it. We look at the key. We look at the theory and all that but then most importantly, what can we do so that we make it ours, beyond just learning it verbatim.
Stuck in the Middle, for example, has this groove [ π΅ π΅ π΅ ] If I take that groove and break it down into its most important components, I might get this [ π΅ π΅ π΅ ]
Out of that, I am distilling [ π΅ π΅ π΅ ] The slash notation, I would say could be up for interpretation. What would you come up with? For example, lets use this reduction and notes from the major triad in addition [ π΅ π΅ π΅ ]
I freely improvise over the rhythm giving myself that particular concept. How about chromaticism? [ π΅ π΅ π΅ ]
How about octaves? [ π΅ π΅ π΅ ]
Octaves and chromaticism [ π΅ π΅ π΅ ]
Roots and fifths [ π΅ π΅ π΅ ]
You can use something like this as a springboard for ideas, but also in a studio, a producer might ask you to play in the style of a particular song or a particular bass player and this is one good way to come up with ideas that fit [ π΅ π΅ π΅ ]

Scalar practice tip with Ari.
When you practice the scale, break it down in the various intervals. For example, Im starting with the easiest interval, thirds. Heres an A major scale. [ π΅ Ari plays scale π΅ ] Im going to extend it to include all of the notes that are part of the scale in this area. [ π΅ Ari plays scale π΅ ]
Now, Im going to break down the scale in thirds [ π΅ Ari plays scale π΅ ]
Essentially you can think: start the scale, skip a note, go up two and go back to what you just skipped, And you weave that through the scale. Now, I recommend you do that on your own rather than read this transcribed.
There are several variations of this you can do. Im playing ascending thirds up through the scale. I call this variation ascending and up and when I turn around and go back from the top I call it descending and down, because were now playing descending thirds down the scale. [ π΅ Ari plays scale π΅ ]
The formula now is two back, one up, two back, one up, two back, one up, two back, one up. Heres a variation, You can switch the starting point. Rather than going up a third, I can start by going down a third and weave that up the scale. Now were calling that descending and up. [ π΅ Ari plays scale π΅ ]
And turning it around it becomes ascending and down. [ π΅ Ari plays scale π΅ ]
Try to make them nice and connected because as you go down, you notice you have a lot of these shifts. [ π΅ Ari plays scale π΅ ] ...that are not so easy to get clean.
Now when you have both of these variations under your belt you can combine them. I call these mixed motion. Up a third and then down a third and now you weave that through the scale. [ π΅ Ari plays scale π΅ ] These are ascending, descending up. [ π΅ Ari plays scale π΅ ]
And theres another way you can do this.Turn around the starting point. Rather than going ascending/descending up, try descending/ascending up. [ π΅ Ari plays scale π΅ ]
Musical applications [ π΅ Ari plays several examples π΅ ]
