The Shape: German confectioner Hans Riegel Sr. founded the Haribo Company in December 13th, 1920. In 1922, he invented the "Dancing Bear" (Tanzbär). These treats were inspired by the real trained bears seen at European street festivals and markets.
The "Gummy" Part: The word "gummy" comes from the chewy base ingredient. Early versions used gum arabic (giving the "gum" name), while modern candies use gelatin to create a bouncy texture.
The Evolution: Riegel's smaller version, called Gummibärchen (little rubber/gum bears), evolved into the modern multicolored Haribo Goldbears we know today.
