This video explains a few different ways to give the illusion of floating sand.

There are a few basic ways to give the illusion of unsupported blocks that would normally fall. One way is to place an item below it. By using a lantern, button, or stalactite on the bottom, it will hold the block suspended in air. Because birch buttons are similar in color to sand, it can be fairly inconspicuous on the bottom, and are able to power redstone lines above.
Finally, placing string harvested from spiders can be a very good way to hide the support and make sand appear to float.
The tricks I show in the video would also work for gravel and concrete powder, but probably not well for TNT due to explosive results.
