Gloves are just plain useful, yet we only wear them in the most extreme of circumstances today- safety in our jobs or against harsh weather. Why did we stop? And if we're going to bring them back for everyday fashion we have a lot of research and work to do. When do we wear them or take them off? What style for what occasion? What colors? Fabrics? And how do we even begin to pattern and make a pair?

The history of glove wearing goes back thousands of years. Examples can be found preserved in Egypt that look nearly the same as our modern gloves. Whether they're leather, knit, lace, or dripping in gold, gloves provided warmth, protection, cleanliness, and above all else- fashion. There were certainly eras where they were more popular- it's difficult to imagine most of the 19th century without some type of hand covering.

The 1920s went all out when it came to gloves. Patterns, appliques, lace, embroidery, buttons, and so much more. Though fashion was far more casual than it had ever been, gloves were still a standard part of everyday wear and etiquette. It would be another 50 years before they faded from popularity for all but the most formal or functional use.
