What upppp! So first off.. this video is longer than my usual video, so I would love to know what you think of the length of this guy. Also will be doing a give away for the wallets:) shmoxd.com/giveaways
I made a wallet with my friend Weston Kay ( @Rose_Anvil ) He has been working with leather forrrrr his whole life... that's why he is here:)
Weston wanted this video series to be called "shmo & the pro"... (we'll see if that sticks) because I'll be making a wallet using stuff I can find at home, while he uses all his professional tools and what not.. Should be fun.
The material I used was a boot, dental floss, sewing needle, fork, hammer, lighter, and a box cutter. Weston used a bunch of stufff..... I'm not going to list them smh.
Weston also made some templates.. that was nice of him.
The basic steps to making the wallet are:
1. cut out the template
2. trace the template on the leather
3. cut out the leather pieces
4. clean up the edges and burnish them a bit
5. punch out the holes
6. stitch the wallet together (here is weston's video where he goes over that better than I do youtube.com/watch?v=Jo30iwkLZHg)
7. Clean up the edges with a knife again
8. Burnish the edges (rub a candle on that bad boyyyyy)
I also wanted to make a wallet using that cool color changing leather.. I'll probably make a little art tool roll up thing in the future... sooo.. what color do you like the best?
I should get CC on this video.. if you wanna help me out there... that would be awesome:):)
Supplies:
Leather (you could just find some) : amzn.to/2mGJdak
Hole punches (worth it) : amzn.to/2mhhzAk
Large eye needle (worth it if you can't find one with large eye) : amzn.to/2l8F7av
Waxed thread (worth it) : amzn.to/2m9piAx
but also...
Leather tool kit (worth it if you are going to do multiple projects) : amzn.to/2lbJL7z

Sooo after Ive spent a bunch of energy and attention a fulfilling a project.. on. once thats done I cant help but feel a little aimless and burnt out (both creatively and physically). I call this the post project blues.
How I get over this is with REST RELAXATION and REWARD. I use this time to do something that doesnt take a whole lot of focus or energy. Usually its video games, scrolling on the socials, or watching mindless tv.
This has been a big part of my creative process cause its usually during these times that I get inspiration for another project that I want to work on.
Inspriation for me can come from a lot of different things.. but usually I get inspiration from rad things that other people create and thinking, oh.. I wanna try that out
I honestly think the quality of the outcome [of a project] is determined by the excitement going into that project. So I always work out what Im most exited with in that moment.
once I decided what to do I try to find whats been done already and think about how I can put my own spin on it. With every new project there are always obstacle and lil internal mes thinking, what if.
What if it doesnt work out quite how I wanted. What if its not unique enough. What if I end up putting a bunch of time into it and it doesnt get any likes. What if any success ive had in the past was just luck. What if I fail.
One of VSCOs tag lines that I really like is MAKE IT ANYWAYS. That helps me remind me that Im not alone in these thoughts and worries... and that Im allowed to fail. Honestly, failure and experimenting is a huge part of my creative process.
Art and creativity is just active problem solving.
With hydro dipping I decided I would cut a hole in my table. That way I could stick a lens up from the bottom and get a bunch of different angles. I also figured out how to pint out my own films.. and figured thats a way I could put my own spin on hydro dipping.. and what I was going to hydro dip was a skull.
I use a lot of skulls in my art because.. I dunno.. I like mixing something we associate with death and mixing it with something that represents life.. like flowers.. so... cool.
I do feel like its kinda a cop out cause its such an easy juxtaposition of taking something morbid and making it cute but.. make it anyway right?
I was also having a hard time get it to work out how I wanted so I kept of experimenting and trying to make it work.. A big part f my experimenting is probably taking things too far... but thats part of the fun.
For me the creative journey and process is way more fulfilling that actually finishing.
Thanks for VSCO fo sponsoring this video:)
