Introducing the avocado – a delicious fashion designer!
Equipment: four ripe avocados, stove, pan, water, cotton T-shirt.
Gather the pits and peels from 4 ripe avocados. Put them in a pot with a white cotton T-shirt. Fill the pot with water and cook on low heat. After a while, cool and rinse the T-shirt with a mild detergent.
Avocado peels and pits contain tannins. Tannins possess colorant, tannic, and astringent properties, and can be found in many plants and fruits, including avocados, oak, pomegranates, strawberries, and tea leaves Tannins are used to tan leather, dye leather and fabrics, produce glue, and make ink. They’re also used as an additive (food coloring E181) to give foods and drinks a tart, astringent taste.
Safety precautions: conduct the experiment under adult supervision only.
