The ram pump needs a constant supply of fresh water. To keep that water flowing and debris free I recommend a screened intake. In this video I show the method I use to make the intake with a 4" pipe and some window screen.

The ram pump is designed to have a pressure tank with air in it that cushions the water hammer. This prevents the ram pump from hitting hard. Over time the air in the pressure tank can dissolve into the water and essentially cause the ram pump to operate as if there were no pressure tank. When this happens the full force of the water hammer acts on the pump and causes it to bounce. If left unchecked over time this can break the pump. In this video I find that the cap on my 1 ram pump has a crack that has let the air out. My system is hitting hard and needs to be fixed.
