How to Lap an AR-15 Upper Receiver for Better Accuracy

In this Brownells Tech Tip, we walk through the process of lapping an AR-15 upper receiver to improve barrel alignment and accuracy. While most factory receivers are functional as-is, minor inconsistencies in the receiver face can cause the barrel to sit slightly off-axis. Lapping corrects this by truing the surface, ensuring the barrel extension mates squarely with the receiver.

This process is especially beneficial for precision builds where consistency at longer distances matters. We cover the tools required, proper technique, and how to avoid removing too much material. If you're building a precision AR or looking to squeeze out maximum performance, this is a simple upgrade you can do at home.
