All Dharmic religious traditions stress the indispensable importance of having a qualified and enlightened Spiritual Master if one seeks to know the highest Truth. The importance of having an authentic guru is especially upheld in the tradition of Sanatana Dharma, which is the fountainhead and ultimate source of every and all Dharmic paths. But how do we know if a so-called Spiritual Master (guru) is true and legitimate versus a fraudulent person who is only pretending to be real? The sacred Vedic scriptures are quite straight-forward and blunt about what constitutes a fake "Spiritual Master". “One who awards his dependent devotional service to the Lord, which destroys the very root of fruitive activities, is a real spiritual master, a real father, a real mother, a real husband, and a real son.” (Narada Pancharatra, 1.10.12)
“A spiritual master who is enriched with transcendental knowledge easily delivers his disciple from the fallen condition of material existence. How can a spiritual master who is imperfect and weak save his disciple?” (Narada Pancharatra, 1.10.19)
“It is the duty of a disciple to reject a spiritual master who is inexperienced in ascertaining what is good and what is bad, who is misguided, or who is very proud.” (Narada Pancharatra, 1.10.20)
“The spiritual master who imparts ignorance in the name of knowledge is the greatest enemy of his disciple. Therefore, a true disciple should respectfully reject him and take shleter of another spiritual master who can impart genuine transcendental knowledge.” (Narada Pancharatra, 1.10.21)
“A weak spiritual master, who is intoxicated by worldly affairs of sense gratification, and is unable to execute his duties properly, is certainly a burden on the shoulder of even his own father.” (Narada Pancharatra, 1.10.22)
