Hi there everybody, thanks for joining me today. I get a lot of questions in my live sessions about promotions and asking for a promotion. And so I just kind of wanted to go over my thought process behind how you go about telling your boss that you’re interested in moving up in the organization. And what the process looks like long-term to see that you get the best chance at that. So the first thing that you want to do is you want to have that discussion with your boss that says basically, that I’m interested in moving up in the organization, what do you think that I need to do to from a skillset perspective or a responsibility perspective to put myself in line for the next promotion. Now what your boss will often say in those cases in, “Well, just keep doing a great job like you’re always doing, and you’ll see that that pays off in the end.” So you’re not getting anything from them, and instead of pushing them say, “OK that’s great” and move on from there. But you’ve planted the seed. The first thing is to let them know you’re interested so that you’re in the circle of discussion when those promotions come up. Now what you want to do is you want to follow up with them three or four weeks later and say, “Hey, is there anything that I can help with that would help get me those skills or responsibilities as far as the next step is concerned? I’d love to help you out with something.” Again, they’ll likely say, “No, that’s OK, just keep doing your job.” What you want to do is, you don’t want to be a pest, but you want to let them know that you’re sincerely interested. Because what’s going to happen is you’re going to come back another couple months after that and ask them the same thing, “Hey, is there anything I can help you with? I’d love to get that experience.” And what they’re starting to see is that you’re persistent. It means you’re serious about it. So even if they took that initial interest in a promotion kind of casually, “No, you know what? Cameron’s kind of serious about wanting a promotion here.” And so that third or fourth time, and you want to ask them maybe every couple of months after that, so you’re not really hounding them. But after three or four times they’re going to give you something. Even if it’s just to shut you up so you don’t come back and keep asking them for things, because they will remember these things, but they’ll start giving you those things. And that’s what you start building on. So every couple of months you come over and you ask them if there’s anything that you can help them with that is going to give you the skills and responsibilities that’ll take you to the next level. Phrase it like that. You should always be asking your boss if there’s anything you can help them with, but you want to ask them specifically about something that is going to help you in your next role as you move up the corporate ladder. So have those continuing discussions down the road. You’re not hounding them, but you’re keeping yourself top of mind so that when the promotion comes up, they’ll think of you. Thanks, have a good one everyone.
