VirtualBox is a useful program that allows you to boot virtual machines concurrently with the operating system you're on. It's really useful for me for extra virtual machines that I want to run while I'm running Windows.

VirtualBox downloads page:

I used Arch Linux as an example:
archlinux.org/download

If you're new to Linux, try Ubuntu or CentOS first.
ubuntu.com/download
