How to install transmission circlips correctly. The direction of installation is crucial to the intended design to secure a gearset location. Installing this wrong can allow the circlip (snap ring) to push off and lock two transmission gearsets simultaneously. Common text used in manufacture recalls is this: IF THE CIRCLIP BREAKS, THE TRANSMISSION COULD LOCK UP, WHICH WOULD ALSO CAUSE THE REAR WHEEL TO LOCK UP. THIS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL AND A CRASH WITH INJURY OR DEATH.
