Hello, Encore owners. Are you looking to put some accessories on the back of your Encore or are you looking to tow a trailer Either way, a hitch is going to be the first step to doing that. And today we are going to be taking a look at installing the etrailer trailer hitch on a 2025 Buick Encore GX. The great part about this hitch is going to be the fact that it's going to be a hidden cross tube. So really the only thing you're going to see when it's installed is going to be the receiver tube opening and the safety chains. The rest of the hitch will bolt up behind the bumper beam so you get a nice secure mounting point, but also it hides the rest of the hitch so you get a nice clean look overall.
What's also nice about the etrailer hitch is going to be the matte black powder coat finish. It looks really sharp. It matches with the vehicle plastics and overall it does hold up to chips and scratches better than some of those gloss coatings. Now this one is going to be a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening, which is also great because a good majority of accessories are going to come in a two inch by two inch configuration. So you're going to have tons of options available when you're looking to pick those up.
Now all of them are going to stay in place with a 5/8 pin and clip. And this is not included with the hitch, but many times when you get accessories, they'll have them included. Sometimes even you can get one that's, you know, an anti-rattle or have some cool features. But I do recommend if you plan on leaving accessories on long term, whether it be a ball mount, maybe a bike rack for the season, maybe looking at a locking pin and clip. It's a really good deterrent from anyone walking by.
They can't just take out the pin and clip and that accessory with them. Now if you are planning on towing, you're going to be hooking up safety chains to the safety chain loops. These are just kind of a standard rolled style. So it's super easy for hooking up a standard S hook or even a larger clevis style is going to work out just fine on here. Speaking of towing, if you are planning on pulling a trailer, you're going to want to adhere to the weight capacities not only of the hitch, but also what the vehicle is rated at.
So take a look at your vehicle's owner's manual and see what it's rated to tow and then compare it with the hitch and take the lower of those two numbers. That way you're not overloading anything. Our hitch today comes in at a gross trailer weight rating of 2,000 pounds, which is going to be the weight of the trailer plus the accessories loaded onto it. Now as far as tongue weight rating, that's the downward pressure on the inside of the receiver tube opening and that's really going to account for a lot of your suspended accessories like cargo carriers or bike racks. Now this one is a little bit low at 200 pounds, but that's still going to be plenty to be able to, you know, bring a couple bikes along, but definitely keep track of how much the bike rack plus those bikes weigh so you're not overloading that in the process. Now some accessories will be a folding configuration, whether it be a bike rack or cargo carrier and they stow vertically when not in use, which is really, really nice, but you want to make sure that it's going to work on this vehicle. So measuring from the center of our hitch pin hole to the furthest point, we're looking at about four inches. Now really don't worry too much that you're going to have issues with it folding up and making contact, but keep in mind when they are folded up, you're probably going to have to lower those down to open up your rear hatch. It's probably going to block your backup camera and your license plate. But again, that's part of the nice part is you get that storage. There is going to be some of those caveats involved with it. Now another quick measurement, and this is going to be really helpful if you plan on getting a ball mount is from the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground, comes in at 12 inches. And why that's important is because when you're towing a trailer, you want it as level as possible. So the best way to do that is if you have your trailer available, get it on level ground, measure from the ground to the top of the coupler, take that measurement, compare it with our 12 inches, and then you
