You can optimize and effectively increase your system's available RAM by adjusting virtual memory, using ready boost, and optimizing background processes, all without physically adding hardware.
1. Adjust Virtual Memory (Paging File)
Windows allows you to use part of your hard drive or SSD as temporary RAM through a paging file:
Open Control Panel → System → Advanced System Settings → Performance → Settings → Advanced → Virtual Memory.
Uncheck "Automatically manage paging file size," select your drive, and choose a custom size. A good starting point is 1.5 times your RAM for initial size and 3 times for maximum size.
Click Set → OK and restart your PC.
This can help when running multiple applications as your system will use disk space to supplement RAM, though it is slower than actual RAM.
2. Use ReadyBoost (Windows Only)
ReadyBoost lets you use a USB flash drive or SD card as extra memory cache:
Insert a fast USB drive (preferably USB 3.0 for speed).
Right-click the drive in File Explorer → Properties → ReadyBoost tab.
Select "Use this device" and allocate space for ReadyBoost.
ReadyBoost can improve performance on older PCs with limited RAM, but offers modest benefit for systems with 8GB or more.
3. Optimize Startup and Background Programs
Freeing up RAM from unnecessary applications can make a noticeable difference:
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to access Task Manager.
Navigate to the Startup tab and disable unnecessary programs.
In the Processes tab, close applications unnecessarily consuming RAM.
Reducing memory usage improves system responsiveness without changing hardware.
