Bearing the rising health care costs of our aging global population is one of the most urgent challenges society is facing. One way to deal with this is technological innovation in treatment techniques. The implementation process of new techniques often presents a huge challenge. New research of Jan van Schaik of Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and Dr Merieke Stevens of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) revealed that better teamwork in the operating room leads to successful implementation of new medical technologies. They found that a medical team’s relational and cognitive embeddedness (how successfully a team communicates and cooperates) increase the effectiveness of care.
