A hard reset, or factory reset, restores your Android phone to its original factory settings by erasing all data, apps, and accounts, and can be done via the Settings menu, recovery mode, or remotely, but always requires backing up your data first.

Step 1 — Prepare Your Device
Before performing a hard reset, ensure you:

Back up all important data: Use Google Drive, your phone manufacturer’s backup tools, or transfer files to a computer or SD card to save photos, contacts, and documents

Know your Google account credentials: Required for setup after resetting due to Factory Reset Protection.

Charge the battery: At least 50–70% to prevent shutdown during the reset

Remove external storage (SD cards) and SIM cards if you want to preserve them.

Sign out of accounts: Optional but recommended when selling or giving away your device

Step 2 — Reset via Settings Menu (Normal Operation)
If your phone is functioning correctly:

Open the Settings app and navigate to System Reset options (or General Management Reset on some devices)

Select Erase all data (factory reset) or Factory data reset

Review the data that will be deleted and tap Reset Phone or Erase Everything. Enter your PIN, pattern, or password if prompted.
Confirm and wait for the process to complete. Your phone will restart automatically when finished

Step 3 — Reset Using Recovery Mode (When Locked or Frozen)
If the device is unresponsive or you’ve forgotten your password:
Power off the device completely (use Power + Volume Down if needed to force shutdown).

Boot into recovery mode using the device-specific button combination:
Samsung: Volume Up + Power (+ Home on older models)
Google Pixel: Volume Down + Power

OnePlus/Xiaomi: Volume Down + Power, or Volume Up + Power, depending on the model

Navigate the recovery menu using the Volume buttons and select Wipe data/factory reset with the Power button

Confirm and wait for the reset to complete. Then select Reboot system now
