Terry Sorensen, CEO of Friends of the Children, a mentorship organization for underprivileged children, successfully scaled her organization from five local chapters to over 30 chapters across the country in 10 years, despite skepticism about the feasibility of scaling her mentorship model.
Terry’s key tip for success is starting somewhere and proving that the model works — creating more wins and more momentum. For healthy growth, the organization focuses on hiring locally and building local boards. By ensuring each chapter is established as a separate 501(c)(3), Friends of the Children ensures local ownership and customization to fit the specific needs of the people living in that area.
The national team provides support, guidance, and seed capital, raising $1-2 million upfront to fund 100% of the program in the first year, 50% in the second year, and 25% in the third year. This structure ensures long-term support for local chapters, allowing them to focus on their work and the power of building relationships to change lives.
