Growing garlic from bulbils takes longer than planting cloves—but could it be a better way to develop large, healthy garlic for your local growing conditions?

In this video, I’m starting a two-year garlic growing experiment using the tiny bulbils produced on hardneck garlic scapes. We’ll look at what garlic bulbils actually are, why they aren’t true seeds, how they differ from garlic cloves, and what happens when you plant them in fall.

As a soil scientist, I’ll also break down the science behind garlic bulb size, cold exposure and vernalization, planting-stock size, scape removal, disease risk, and selecting locally successful garlic. The goal is to see whether tiny bulbils can eventually produce the huge garlic bulbs I’ve seen other gardeners growing here in Saskatchewan.

🌱 The experiment:
Bulbil → first-year garlic round → replant → mature garlic bulb

We’ll follow these plants through multiple growing seasons to see what actually happens.

If you grow hardneck garlic, save garlic scapes, or want to learn how to grow bigger garlic, follow along as we put this method to the test.

Topics covered: growing garlic from bulbils, planting garlic bulbils, garlic scapes, growing large garlic, when to plant garlic, hardneck garlic, garlic rounds, garlic propagation, fall garlic planting, cold-climate gardening, Saskatchewan gardening, Zone 3 gardening, and science-based gardening.

Ashley has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are YouTube, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s YouTube channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her YouTube channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.
