getting the correct proper exposure is easy if you change your camera to spot metering and use a 18% gray card. this will give your the correct exposure for skin tones and give you a great place to start adjusting your exposure to your own style. your cameras auto exposure does do a great job but if you want more control getting the exposure yourself is a great way to go. you don't need a light meter to get correct exposure yes its a little easier but the cost of a 18%gray card makes it well worth it to learn how to use it.
