Using Blazing Lazers aka Gunhed on the TurboGrafx 16 / PC Engine, I'll show you key areas to hone your skills and practice. It's a perfect starter shoot em up for beginners.

Whether you prefer old school retro shooters like me, or Bullet Hell / Danmaku style shoot 'em ups like Dodonpachi, the one method I cover and 3 ways to practice will help you get good and make future Shmups easier to master.
Blazing Lazers is readily available on the inexpensive PC Engine Mini and TurboGrafx 16 Mini, as well as other emulators and releases for you to play. In fact I used the PC Engine Mini in the making of this tutorial. It's a great retro gaming mini console and Blazing Lazers is a really fun game to learn.
