Caps work slightly differently in FO76 vs Fallout 4. What worked in the single player game will not work in Fo76. I'll cover a number of ways in which beginner and other players can start to earn caps. Soon you'll be at the cap limit!

Crops, Meat, and Water can be sold to NPCs for caps.
