I need a LOT of mulch around our property — not a few bags from the garden center. I’m talking 20, 40, or even 60 yards at a time.
So instead of buying expensive bulk dyed mulch, I’m taking a huge load of FREE arborist wood chips, spreading them around the property, and turning them into black dyed mulch for less than $1 per cubic yard.
In this video, I’ll show you how I get free wood chips through ChipDrop, how I use them to build large mulch beds around groups of trees, and how well spray-on black mulch dye actually works — including on fresh wood chips that still have quite a bit of moisture in them.
We’ll also go through the landscape fabric I use, spreading the mulch with the tractor, mixing the mulch colorant, spraying it, coverage, drying time, and the final results.
For a rural property like ours, free arborist wood chips are incredibly useful. Besides landscaping and mulch beds, we’ve used them under the kids’ swing set and on walking paths through the woods to help control mud.
If you have a large property and need a LOT of mulch without spending a fortune, this might be one of the cheapest ways to do it.
