In this video, I show you how to fix the "Smart App Control blocked an app that may be unsafe" error on Windows 11. If you are trying to run a legitimate program but Windows Security keeps blocking it, this step-by-step guide will help you allow the app or adjust your Smart App Control settings safely
Smart App Control (SAC) is one of Microsoft's most aggressive security features. Unlike traditional antivirus that looks for known viruses, Smart App Control uses AI and cloud-powered intelligence to block any app that is "unsigned" or has a "low reputation." This means that even safe, open-source, or older tools that you have used for years might suddenly be blocked after a Windows update.
In this video, I’ll show you how to navigate the Windows Security settings to resolve this block. I also address the biggest frustration with this feature: the fact that Microsoft still has not provided a simple toggle to turn it back on once it’s been disabled. Many users are told they must reinstall their entire operating system just to get this feature back—but don't worry, Tech Mash has a better solution!

⚠️ WHY IS MICROSOFT BLOCKING YOUR APPS? As of 2026, Microsoft has tightened its security policies. If an app doesn't have a valid digital signature from a trusted certificate authority, Smart App Control will automatically flag it. This is particularly common for:
Indie games and community mods.
Specialized engineering or CSE tools.
Older "legacy" software that was built before SAC was introduced.
Custom-built scripts and developer tools.
🛠️ THE "I BUTTON" FIX: While this video shows you how to turn the feature OFF to get your app running, I highly recommend turning it back ON afterward to keep your system protected. Since the 'On' switch is usually greyed out, you should watch my dedicated Registry Editor fix. I have linked it in the Information (I) Button in the top right corner of this video. That method will show you how to use regedit to toggle the VerifiedAndReputablePolicyState value so you don't have to reinstall Windows.

Q: Is it safe to turn off Smart App Control? A: If you are running an app you 100% trust, turning it off temporarily is fine. However, we recommend turning it back on using our Registry method to stay protected against ransomware.
Q: Why isn't there a "Run Anyway" button? A: Unlike SmartScreen, Smart App Control is designed to be more restrictive. In "Enforcement Mode," it removes the choice from the user to ensure maximum security for non-technical users.
Q: Does this work on Windows 10? A: Smart App Control is currently a Windows 11 exclusive feature. If you are on Windows 10, you are likely seeing a different type of block, such as SmartScreen.
Q: Will disabling this delete my files? A: No, disabling the setting will not delete any files, but Microsoft's "official" way to turn it back on (reinstalling) WOULD delete your apps, which is why we suggest the Registry fix instead.
