In this Fly8MA flight training lesson, we demonstrate a practical, real-world technique to determine your airplane's maximum demonstrated crosswind component. By flying a low approach over the runway and entering a full forward slip, you can measure your maximum rudder deflection against your heading indicator. Using this degree swing and the FAA's Alaskan Off-Airport Operations chart, you can accurately calculate how much direct crosswind your specific airframe can handle. We also discuss how to perform this maneuver safely with a CFI or by using GPS ground track data at a safe altitude.
