This video will show you how to find the Android version of any android device. There are a several different versions including Froyo, Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwhich, and Jelly Bean. In the newer versions, you can tap on the Android version number a few times (as shown at the end of the video) and it will show you what the name of the operating system is, but I don't think it workss before Ginger Bread, so it might not work on an older android device.
The basic steps are to go to your phone's home screen, hit the menu button (beside the home button usually) and choose system settings. On the screen that pops up, scroll all the way to the bottom, and choose the "About Phone" option. On the next screen that pops up, choose the "Software Information" option. This will bring you to a last screen where at the top it will say "Android Version" with the Android Version number right below it. In newer Android Operating systems (3.0 and above) if you tap on the android version a bunch of times quickly, it will pop up with a picture the Android Robot decorated as your operating system.
