There are various ways and tricks to finding studs - using a cup, knocking on the wall, measuring from a corner or an electrical outlet, pushing a nail into the wall, etc. Using a stud finder is quick and easy and often gives added confidence in locating the stud. Wood studs are most common, but there can be metal studs. Not all stud finders can locate metal studs, electrical wires, pipes, etc. But, some more sophisticated ones can find other materials inside the wall cavity.
