You can completely erase a USB flash drive on a Windows PC using File Explorer, Disk Management, or Command Prompt to delete all contents safely.
Method 1 — Using File Explorer
Insert the USB drive into your Windows PC's USB port.
Open File Explorer (Windows + E), and locate your USB drive under "This PC".
Right-click the USB drive and select Format.
In the Format dialog box, you can choose:
File system: NTFS (for large files, Windows PC only), FAT32 (compatible with most devices), or exFAT (cross-platform, supports large files).
Allocation unit size: Default is typically fine.
Quick Format: Check if you want a faster erase (removes file references but not fully secure). Uncheck for a full format for a more thorough wipe.
Click Start and confirm. This will erase all files on the USB drive.
Method 2 — Using Disk Management
Press Windows + X and select Disk Management.
Locate your USB drive in the list of volumes. Be careful to select the correct drive.
Right-click the USB drive partition and select Delete Volume.
Confirm the deletion.
Once deleted, the drive becomes unallocated. To reuse it:
Right-click and select New Simple Volume, follow the wizard to format it with your preferred file system.
