To recap, 2 thicker coats first, then 2-3 thinned coats to follow. Each time being very careful not to put on excess mud (that would have to be sanded off).
The final step before priming is to spot fill areas, using a strong light to look the walls over carefully.
Even if you decide to do some sanding in the end, you will have a lot less to do if you follow this method. It does take longer, but if avoiding the sanding dust is a priority for you (it is for me), then the extra work is more than worth it.
