How to Donate Hair for Cancer Patients

Many have asked me how to go about donating your hair to make into wigs for cancer patients. I hope this post helps.

I read about it when I was doing research on Cancer.

I lost my father to lung cancer so I try and advocate cancer awareness when I can.

In Malaysia, the only reputable organisation that we have is Locks of Hope , an NGO that accepts hair donation to be turned into wigs for cancer patients.

During the MCO, it was the perfect time to grow my hair out as salons were closed and I could not go out anyway. So my ruly hair was always in a bun or underneath a cap, turban or shawl.

Hair for donation cannot be chemically treated in the recent 6 months. Locks of Hope accepts permed, dyed and rebonded hair past 6-month-old, as long as it’s not bleached or damaged. I was worried as my hair was not just chemically treated, but curly AND dry, but luckily it’s ok.

Some NGOs have requirement about accepting grey hair but it’s not specified for Locks of Hope. Thank God as I had plenty of uban showing.

I scheduled an appointment with Geetha @themetgrandsalon - much to her relief! She was so geram seeing my white hair, she sent over a DIY colouring kit for me during the lockdown in July 2021.

So January 2022 was perfect timing to get this done.

I took my hair home to courier it to Locks of Hope myself because The Met Salon is not a partner saloon.

You will need to fill out the donation form found on Locks of Hope Association FB page.
The mailing address is on that form too and you can even choose to donate money to make your hair into a wig. It costs RM820 to make a wig in China so feel free to attach a cheque of RM820 if you’d like to donate money and/or hair.

Alternatively, you can drop the hair at their office in Kajang; there’s a donation bin but remember to attach your form if you want it registered ok?

Besides that, Locks of Hope has saloon partners. If you go to the saloon partners, you can just leave the hair and donation form there.

The list can be found on their website here: locksofhope.myfreesites.net/information.

Just a reminder:

* Locks of Hope’s minimum is 6 inches but prefers 8 inches or longer. Probably because while your longest may be 6 inches, there may be layers shorter than 6.

* To protect the donated hair, Lock of Hope advises to keep the hair in a sealed plastic bag before couriering, dropping off at donation bin or leaving it behind at partner saloon.

* Make sure your hair is dry and clean. Moisture in hair can cause hair to turn moldy; it’d be a waste before it gets turned into wig! Do not apply any products on your hair before donation e.g. wax, gel, spray, mousse, pomade.

* Tie your hair securely and neatly before cutting

It feels a bit odd having my hair so short. It’s easier to wash but quite a pain to style as my hair is curly and frizzy. So I guess the hair covering journey continues? We shall see.

Thank you Adeline for being my impromptu cameraman and for the @plie_malaysia corsets and tank tops. After all that Penang food, I sure as hell need it!

Thank you @geetha1510 and William for handling emo me. I’m so glad I chose The Met to get this done cause I was relaxed even though I’ve been meaning to do it for some time now. I’m glad I have an option of human hair extensions if I get bored of my short hair 🤣

This is for you Dad. Hope you’re ok there ❤️ Still missing you.
