Rokolee DIY | How to do the Long Tail Cast-On PURLWISE (aka Reverse Long Tail) | Casting On Tutorial @RokoleeDIY | Uploaded February 2022 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
This video demonstrates the PURL version of the long tail cast on method, which is fairly uncommon but can come in handy as it gives you options about how you want your cast-on edge to look.
If you use the regular (knitwise) long tail cast on, then the side that is facing you will be smooth and have little diagonal strands of yarn along the edge, whilst the side that is facing away from you will feature a bumpy edge - made up of purl bumps. In the purlwise long tail cast on, this effect is reversed, with the purl bumps facing you instead.
Knowing both the knitwise and purlwise techniques just allows you to choose which side of the knitting you want to have the purl bumps on, and which side you want the smoth side. It's all personal preference - there's no 'wrong' way. For instance, I prefer the purl bumps to be on the wrong side of stockinette stitch rather than on the right side.
I hope this video is useful to you!
