Amazon announced this feature in 2019 at their annual hardware event as a way to expand connectivity of all their devices beyond just your home.
Sidewalk enabled devices essentially create a giant mesh network with other Sidewalk enabled devices. It was initially an “opt-in” service, however a lot of users have reported that it was enabled by default, which isn’t typically a great first sign for a service that relies on users trusting the company providing it.
