Learn how to delete backup files from an external portable SSD connected to your Samsung Galaxy S26, Galaxy S26 Plus, or Galaxy S26 Ultra. This can be useful when your portable SSD is running out of storage space and you want to remove old photos, videos, documents, or other backup files.

Samsung's My Files app can manage files stored on USB drives and other external storage. When a compatible USB storage device is connected, it can appear as USB storage in My Files, allowing you to browse and manage the files stored on the drive.

To delete a backup, connect the portable SSD to the Galaxy S26 series phone using a compatible USB-C cable. Open the My Files app, locate the connected USB storage, and navigate to the folder containing the backup you no longer need. Touch and hold the file or folder, tap Delete, and confirm the deletion by selecting Move to Recycle bin when prompted. Samsung documents this general process for deleting files and folders through My Files.

Before deleting anything, carefully check the file name, folder, date, and contents. Make sure you have another copy of any important photos, videos, documents, or backups that you may need later. Deleting the wrong backup could result in permanent data loss.

If the portable SSD does not appear in My Files, check the USB-C connection, cable, power requirements, and whether the external storage is recognized by the phone. Samsung notes that external-storage support can vary by device and storage device.

After deleting files, remember that My Files may move deleted items to its Recycle bin. Samsung states that deleted files can remain there for 30 days before permanent deletion, depending on the device and software configuration. You can open My Files Recycle bin to review, restore, or permanently delete items.

For safety, do not disconnect the portable SSD while files are being deleted or transferred. Wait until the operation is complete before disconnecting the drive, and always verify that you are deleting the intended backup rather than the only copy of important data.
