How to assess and deal with inoperative aircraft equipment or instruments is one of the most common questions flight students struggle with on their checkrides. Besides, insufficient systems, airspace and aerodynamics knowledge, flight students also often struggle to effectively communicate to the FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) how they would handle the scenario where a piece of equipment is not working on the aircraft. In this video I go over the process of assessing whether or not an aircraft is still airworthy when there is an inoperative piece of equipment identified.
The DPE wants to understand where the candidate would go, from a documentation standpoint, to determine if the aircraft can be flown with some hypothetical piece of equipment not working on it. The required documents to consider include an MEL (if one exists), the TCDS, the CAR, a KOEL (if one exists), the POH's Comprehensive Equipment List, 91.205, and any Airworthiness Directives. #flighttraining #flight #learntofly
