This tiny pet bunny rabbit has been sad lately. We think he needs more sun. During the spring, summer, and fall, the indoor rabbit loves going outside and running around and eating grass and meeting wild rabbits. But in the winter he refuses to go outside at all. He also doesn't sit in the sun much - maybe that means he has a vitamin D deficiency. We thought we would allow him to try sitting by a lightbox to cure his depression. The only problem? He also loves chewing cords! :D
Lights used to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) are most commonly called light therapy boxes, SAD lamps, or sun lamps. These devices emit a bright, full-spectrum light that mimics natural outdoor sunlight to help regulate mood and sleep cycles.
How light boxes work: They trigger a chemical change in the brain, lifting mood and easing symptoms like low energy or oversleeping.
Usage: They are most effective when used for about 30 minutes in the morning, usually to the side of your face.
Key features: Look for a device that provides 10,000 lux and filters out ultraviolet (UV) light.
Other types: Some alternatives include "dawn stimulators," which wake you up with a gradually brightening light.
Do light boxes work? Yes! Rabbits love them! Not as much as eating a banana or eating a carrot, but still, it made the rabbit happy - he hopped around and jumped and did binkies and zoomies!
