This fun, cute heart square is worked in corner to corner double crochet boxes. Whether as a stand alone square used as a doily or washcloth, or sewn together for a something larger like a shawl or afghan, the project possibilities are endless!
If you work with worsted weight acrylic yarn, and meet my gauge (two provided in the pattern), you will finish with either an 8" or 8 1/2" square, but if gauge is not essential to your project, you can use any weight or fiber yarn with the respective crochet hook.
You'll need some worsted yarn - I'm using Red Heart Super Saver, a H8/5mm Crochet Hook, and a Tapestry Needle. If the finished size is essential to you, then you'll also want a Soft Tape Measure.
For the heart color, you'll need about 10 yards, and for the background color and border, you'll need about 20 yards.
I like Red Heart's Super Saver for my home projects because it's affordable, durable, and machine washes well. I also really like Lion Brand Wool Ease, and WeCrochet Swish, which are both wool blends. They're so soft, cozy and not itchy. For non-wool options, try WeCrochet Brava or Lion Brand Color Theory.

If I was going to make something like a washcloth, doily or table runner, I would use a cotton yarn, like Lily Sugar n Cream or WeCrochet Dishie.
Note: I use crochet washcloths as part of my decor rather than for washing and drying, but I know that many do use them as they were intended to be used, and as a washcloth C2C in double crochet becomes saggy because of the spaces in the boxes, and by the spaces, I mean the slit from the beginning chain that all the stitches are worked into so I do recommend half double crochet boxes for a better washcloth.

I am able to work up my square in about an hour and a half.
