My name is Kailey from Crochet Unraveled and today I’m going to teach you how to crochet a slip stitch. But first, if you’re new here, I want to make sure that you subscribe to my channel and hit that notification bell to be notified whenever I post a new video. Alright, let’s get into it.
0:24 IDENTIFY CORRECT STITCH
So the first thing you’re going to do is identify the stitch that you’re going to put your slip stitch into. In this case, I’m going to use the back bump of the 3rd chain from my hook.
0:37 INSERT YOUR HOOK
Next you’re going to insert your hook into that stitch.
0:45 YARN OVER
Then you’re going to yarn over bringing the yarn from the far side to the close side of your hok.
0:49 PULL THROUGH
Then you're going to pull that loop up so you have two loops on your hook. Then you will pull that loop through the first loop.
And that’s your first slip stitch! I’m going to repeat this a few times. I’m just going to do 2 chains, and then skip one stitch and I’m going to do a slip stitch in the second.
1:11 MORE DETAILS
At this point you can probably tell that slip stitches are essentially the same thing as a chain. The only difference is that in a slip stitch your first step is to insert your hook into whichever stitch that you’re going to do your slip stitch in.
1:30 PRACTICE
Now let’s try another slip stitch. So we’re going to insert our hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over, pull that loop through and then pull that loop through the loop that was already on your hook.
Now you can see this kind of lace effect that we are creating here with the chains and slip stitches.
2:00 SLIP STITCH TO CREATE CIRCLE
Next, I want to show you how to create a circle out of a chain, by slip stitching to the end stitch. SO you’re just gonna identify that chain at the very end, insert your hook, yarn over, and then pull through first the stitch and then that loop that was originally on your hook.
So now I’m just going to do a single crochet in each one of the stitches around so I can show you just one more thing, which is how to join the end of a row to the beginning of that same row using a slip stitch.
2:52 JOIN ROUNDS WITH A SLIP STITCH
Alright, so to start this row I did a ‘chain 1’ so we’re gonna just skip that stitch and we’re not crocheting into it. Instead I’m gonna use that first single crochet, insert my hook into both loops, yarn over - just like we’ve been doing, pull through, and then pull through again so you have one loop on your crochet hook. And that is how you join a row using a slip stitch
